The Boys

Well! Here I am, officially full-term! I knew it was likely I would go to term since I wasn’t pregnant with twins or anything, but I’m still a little surprised by he whole thing. We had an ultrasound the other day to make sure everything is on track–the size estimate was 7lbs. 12 oz. The 3D wand revealed two very chunky cheeks and a babe gnawing on his own hand. I think this kid might be a moose. He’s actually so chubby that I have no idea who he looks like–all I could see were cheeks!

I did want to just take a second to report on the boys that are out of utero and make sure I capture their little personalities now–before a screaming newborn gets in the way of me noticing all the adorable details that make up my brood.

Charlie is, as always, Charlie. I got in three solid months of ABR on him before my belly became unmanageable, and we got some great results. He’s already seeing a lot more movement and flexibility in his pelvis which is great. CP kids tend to move in one solid block, so every little bit really helps. School has also reported increased vocalizations–according to them, he has two words that he can approximate: “more” and “home.” He, of course, does none of this when he’s actually home with me–why try to talk when mom can read your mind?

I’ve been trying to carve out time to “talk” on the iPad each night and the conversations we have really crack me up. He is unfailingly honest–he didn’t like school lunch, the mac and cheese Daddy bought weren’t very good, he LOVES ketchup. It can be hard because he doesn’t know how to spell very many words, but he is always pleased when I take the time to teach him a new word. Vision is definitely an issue for him and I’m still trying to figure out the best way to work with it. Step one is going to be an appointment with the eye doctor to see if glasses might help. Meanwhile, I’m happy to have some way of knowing what’s going on in his head–even if a lot of our conversations are yes/no. He is my little sweetie pie 95% of the time and adore this age so much.

My angel.

The twins, meanwhile, are growing at an astounding rate. Normal human development just sort of blows my mind. One day I’m worrying because they were still barely sitting up and the next thing I know, they’re pulling up and cruising. This is not a pace that I’m used to. We’ve have to buy a baby gate to protect Charlie from them. He is, in general, very gracious about their grabby, grubby fingers in every part of his life, but sometimes it’s just too much. The other day I found Louis sitting on Charlie’s neck–Charlie was, unnerved, to say the least.

Louis continues to be the world’s biggest drama queen. It started in utero with his borderline anemia status, and continues to this very day. He is over-the-top in everything: his laugh is this huge laugh that lights up his eyes and sounds partially like he’s hyperventilating. His scream? Could be in a horror movie. It’s throaty and hoarse and I’m pretty sure the cops are going to come knocking because of if.

Louie is also the most out-going of all my boys. He smiles at everyone. He likes to be where everyone else is. I’m pretty sure that if he could, he would attach himself to my leg and never let go. He also takes the lead when it comes to gross motor development–probably because he’s not a bit scared of hurting himself. He was the first to sit, the first to kneel, the first to pull up and cruise, and I suspect he’ll be the first to walk. He’s also got what seems like a permanent bruise on his forehead. I cannot get a picture of the kid that doesn’t include some sort of forehead mark. He’s also doing a LOT better with his eating and we’ve been able to introduce all sorts of new foods into his diet.

And then there’s August–or, as I like to call him, Gussy. Gussy is my adventurer. He’s the first one to investigate a new room or situation. He’s not afraid to be out of your sight, while Louis always wants to be able to have eyes on you. He’s also the one that will try to climb on something not meant to be climbed on or try to crawl down a flight of stairs. Hubby calls him The Mountain Goat.

He also still a total cuddler. He loves to sit in your lap. He also loves blanket and pillows. He will happily flop his entire body down on a pillow or give a spontaneous hug to his blanket. I suspect I should dig out some stuffed animals for the kid–Charlie disliked them as a wee one, so there aren’t many lying around. Something tells me Gussy would be all about a stuffed friend.

So those are my boys. I love find their similarities and even more so, their differences. They are unique little people and it is really an honor to watch them grow. It’s tough right now–I’m so big and everything feels like a major effort–but I am blessed beyond measure and I know it.
