Plot Twist

I’ve been wondering how to start this post for the last couple of weeks–I stay up late at night composing sentences in my head and I never seem to come up with anything that sounds quite right.

So I’m just going to say it.

I’m pregnant.

Yes, again.

I’m sure y’all areΒ  wondering, and yes, this was definitely a surprise. As soon as I got pregnant with the twins I KNEW I wanted four children. I had never imagined an odd number of kids and for whatever reason I felt like Charlie would always be the odd man out if we stopped after the twins. I was not, however, planning on having the fourth baby five seconds after I had babies two and three!

I walked around in a daze for a couple of days after I found out. I mean, how on Earth was I going to handle three babies? That’s like triplets or something!! (For the record, I know that having children close in age isn’t the same as having multiples–my logical brain did not at all care at this point).

But then the crazies passed and I started thinking of positives–this kid will probably be such good friends with the twins–I bet they’ll be inseparable before I know it. More siblings for Charlie means more helping hands after Hubby and I are gone. Before, it would have been a race to get pregnant before I entered the high-risk category. Now, I’m totally safe.

With all the people out there killing themselves to have babies, I can’t see this as a bad thing–even if the timing is a little different than I anticipated.

It’s still early–just ten weeks–but my doctor feels good about the pregnancy, so I figured I’d share. Also, I suck at keeping secrets. I also feel pretty certain that if things were to go wrong, I’d want to talk about that here too, so why not share the news? So far, things have been fine–no nausea, I’m feeling that first trimester fatigue, but luckily the holidays mean more helping hands. I’m hoping this will be an easy pregnancy.

Doctor puts my due date at June 23rd. If I deliver at 39 weeks, this baby will share a birthday with the twins.

It’s crazy around here, but a good crazy.

  1. Susan, Mum to Molly says:

    Congratulations to you all Katy!

Your three boys will be wonderful big brothers…

    Maybe to a little sister!?

So glad you’re not feeling too unwell yet.

I’d strongly encourage you to put your feet up (literally) as much as humanly possible.

Best wishes for the next thirty weeks or so,

    Susan in Sydney (Australia)

    • Susan, Mum to Molly says:

PS: you much need to update your ‘about me’ blurb on the right! πŸ˜‰

PPS: what on earth are you doing blogging at 6 am – go back to sleep woman!!

      • well, I do need to update that box–wonder if I can find it! I’ve had a completely relaxing holiday and am hoping to repeat that over Christmas. :)

        • Susan, Mum to Molly says:

Sorry Katy – that “much” was meant to be a “might”…

Note to self: never trust autocorrect when typing on an iPad in bed at midnight!

A completely relaxing Christmas is my wish for you too.

          Take care, Susan x

  2. Oh my goodness what a shocker this must have been for you and your hubby! I’m so very happy for you my friend!

Love to you, Charlie and the twins!

  3. Oh my!!!

  4. Congrats!!! One thing is for sure – life is not going to be dull around your house for a few years!

  5. Congratulations! As the parents of 4 including twins, let me share that my twins just love having little brothers, the little ones adore their older brothers, and the (non twins) take to each other as much as the twins… it’s a good thing and 4 w/twins is working out great! They have a lot of fun and love to look forward to (and so do you!)

  6. Big Dog Mom Pam says:

I had a funny feeling the minute I saw the words “Plot Twist” as the title of this entry. Oh, Katy, I’m so happy for you! I’m from a big family of 6 kids and we’re all about 2 years apart . . . wasn’t planned but Mom was happy about it because it gave us somebody to play with . . . but it seemed like somebody was always in diapers! I will say prayers for you, hubby, and all the babies!! Maybe a girl this time??!!

    • Anything’s possible! Although we’re definitely not planning on a girl–we seem to be better at making the other flavor of baby! I think a big family will be a good thing. Neither my brother or Hubby’s are planning on having children, which means my kids will only have each other–no cousins.

  7. Wowza! How exciting!

  8. Wow! I can only imagine your shock! Congratulations! A big family will be wonderful for everyone, and having the kids so close in age will make them all so close to each other. It will be exhausting but amazing!

  9. You are either the bravest person I know or completely crazy and I’m not sure which. Enjoy the journey and remember to be a little selfish and take care of yourself

    • Well, I don’t feel brave, so crazy it is! Don’t worry about me putting up my feet–I am, by far, one of the BEST relaxers I have ever met.

  10. Congrats! So exciting! Us parents with kids with issues, well, we work in different ways than most, our plans going out the windows and going with it! It’s a great way to live actually. But I also have a secret, let’s just says its almost exactly the same as yours. And I think people will think we’re crazy too. But for all the same reasons you mention (except our gap is bigger) it’s a great thing.

    • I feel the exact same way–the plan went out the window ages ago! I’m excited about your secret–congratulations!

      • Also, I should say that I was a tiny bit relieved to know that this is a singleton and not another set of twins. I bet you were too! :)

  11. Congratulations!!! If anyone can do it, you can! You’re fabulous!

  12. Yay!! Congrats! You are already an amazing mom and you’ll never feel the effects of one more. I hope and pray that this is an amazingly perfect pregnancy with an amazingly perfect baby.

  13. I’m so glad this is something you can be happy about! Congratulations!

I’m sure it will not always be so easy, but I’m happy that you are able to look for the positives, and I know it will work out for the best.

    • From where I’m sitting there are far more positives than negatives. Just gotta get through another pregnancy and c-section.

  14. Woman you bring new meaning to the words “Plot Twist” (and in good ways). Congrats, now go back to sleep.

  15. OMG, awesome!! My first thought was that this baby has to be a girl;-) S o surprised and happy for your family!!

  16. Congrats! Enjoy the “calm” now before baby #4 comes around. I’m all for getting hectic for a few years and having the kids close in age. Hope this pregnancy and delivery is non-eventful!

  17. Congrats. I have 4 and love having 4. I told my husband we were either having 2 or 4 not 3. So the descision to have 3 was actually to have 4.

    Congrats!

    • Good to know I’m not completely alone in my want of an even number! I think four will be fine. Not sure where I’m going to put them all, but fine, really.

  18. Holy Cow!! Congratulations!!! We’re laughing with you…you are laughing, right? πŸ˜‰

  19. Wow! Congrats! I know you & the boys will be just fine.

  20. Ahhh! As soon as I read the title to this post, I suspected. Oh my goodness! Congratulations! Hope this pregnancy treats you well. :-)

  21. COngrats, sweet pea! It may be overwhelming at first but it is a blessing and yes, they will all be super close! Love it! Very happy for you all!

    • Thanks! I think motherhood is overwhelming sometimes no matter how many kids you have, so hopefully I’ll figure out how to do it with four.

  22. So wonderful!! Here’s to a happy and healthy Mama and babes.

  23. CONGRATS! You are amazing, Katy! ps you need to update your “about me” section!
    xoxoxoxoxxoxo

    • I’m not amazing at all! Crazy, maybe, but not amazing. And I should update that section, but it’s very difficult to find.

  24. Congratulations, so glad I found you through a link on twitter. Yours will be even closer in age than mine are. I have two surviving triplets and found out we were pregnant again before their first birthday too. It has been a wild ride but my three are so close and ultimately, you are already in the baby/never-ending diaper changing phase anyway so why not add one more :). Best wishes for a healthy pregnancy, have to follow you now so I can follow you on the journey!

    • Hi, Jessica! I’m really glad to hear you are surviving with three close in age. Love your blog, by the way. I’ve never commented, but I’ve lurked and recommending your writing to a friend whose daughter has Autism.

  25. Congratulations! How absolutely Lovely! I’m so happy for you!

  26. Congratulation :-)

  27. Wow! Congratulations!

  28. Holy smokes, Batman! That is indeed a plot twist! But you are such an amzing mama, you are well able for the challenges here – and certainly full of the love for your family! But, that is a LOT of simultaneously dirty bottoms . . . my three year old with CP is potty training now and I think about dirty bottoms a lot. Congrats to you all!

  29. Congrats to ALL!!! Wow…so exciting!!! I feel this one will wear pink, just a funny feeling :)

    • Everyone seems to be rooting for pink–I guess we’ll just have to wait and see. I think we’ll be fine either way :)

  30. Crazy indeed!

    Congratulations!

  31. What whatttttt! Nice! Congratulations dear!

  32. Whoa! Plot twist, indeed! You seem like someone who will be able to handle this well — hopefully your husband is, too :). I loved (and still love) being close in age to my siblings (though we aren’t as close as yours will be) — I was 3-1/2, and my brother was 1-1/2, when our twin brother and sister were born. We always had a great time playing together. Congratulations!

    • I like to hear stories like this! I figure, whatever doesn’t kill me, makes me stronger. Also, I will totally hire a mother’s helper if I need them.

  33. I thought I gasped loud when you announced you were having twins! Wow! Congratulations. :)

    • Yeah, my life certainly has a flair for the dramatic–I wish it would provide me with a little warning sometimes!

  34. meghatronsmom says:

Wow! Congrats! I am always amazed at those who find time or have the energy to do things to get pregnant with all that you have going on. Best wishes!

  35. Congratulations! I hope you have a extra smooth pregnancy! It’s not fun being sick, let alone being sick with babies at home!

  36. Congrats! That is crazy news, but absolutely great news! I’m the youngest of 4, and all 4 of us were born in a 5 year time span. I really do think I had the best possible childhood – we all got along well, and still do!

Your kids will be lucky to have you and lucky to have each other!

    • Hooray! Just the kind of news I like to hear. I do hope the kids will get along–that would make things soooo much easier.

  37. I have only one question- When do you find time to make more babies? Wait, was that crass? You know I’m teasing you, right? You amaze me and I love ya. Congrats!!!! Another baby for me to snuggle! WOOP!

    πŸ˜€

  38. WOW!!! Is all I have to say. And congrats! And I’m a little jealous πŸ˜‰

  39. Congrats!! It boggles the mind but…congrats! And I’m 10 weeks too so I’llbe following right along :)

  40. And to think you fretted over getting pregnant…. you’re as fertile as me!
    Congrats!!

  41. Congratulations! I am so happy for you, and I must admit–a bit envious!! I only have one! I would have loved to have had four. At least a helper for my Emma when she is older. Four sounds wonderful. You guys are going to have so much fun.

  42. Speechless. At first.

    Congratulations!

  43. WOW! Huge congratulations to you Katy! I do have to admit that this post totally shocked me. Totally.

  44. Wow, Katy! That’s fantastic news! In watching you grow up I never anticipated you having any children. I thought you would become an actress in Hollywood. True! And here you are on #4! Big families are chaotic, loud & full of fun! Funny how life takes you to places you never could have imagined!

  45. WOW! I just about fell off my chair when I read this. Shocking, to say the least! Congratulations to you and hubby! This is very, very exciting! So happy for you guys!

  46. Wowza! Congrats Katy!

  47. Wow, Katy! Congratulations! Never a dull moment around your house, eh? Will be praying for a safe pregnancy and delivery and healthy baby and mama! HUGS!

  48. CONGRATS!!!!!!!!!!!! There is never a perfect time to have a baby. It’s the Lord who decides in the end, and His time is always the RIGHT time!

I’m thrilled for you and your hubby and the gang. I had all 5 of mine really close. Yes, they will be close and it’ll be a challenge. BUT oh the blessings!! No words for that.

    Glad you are feeling good.

I still want to see those beautiful twins and finally met your sweet Charlie!!

  49. I just saw this! Congrats, Katy! You are a truly inspiring woman and mom, and this baby boy/girl is already insanely lucky to have you.

  50. Holy cow! Congratulations. I’m due in April and my oldest and the newest will be 18 months apart and I thought that was too much but you have handled so many tough crazy things so gracefully you’ll be fantastic! The twins will be cruising and possibly walking by then so it will be a fun time and Charlie will do great having the extra sibling.

  51. Congrats to all of you….

  52. Such a shock, but such GREAT news! :) I can’t imagine being you, but you’re going to handle it wonderfully. Now I’m excited for the name search again! :)

  53. hopefulmother says:

I am shocked, and very excited for you! If anyone can do it, you can!!

  54. Katy,

I have been following your blog since before Charlie was born. I am very happy for you. Your children are all blessed to have such an incredible mother. I only have one child she is 15 now, not so small ha ha, but if I could have had more I would have! Enjoy them they grow so fast!!!!

Can’t wait to follow and see how everything is going! Charlie is so handsome and your twins are precious!

Hope you have a wonderful Christmas!!

  56. For real? Is that even possible you did just have twins after all :) How did you … never mind I’m so happy for you :)

Wishing you and yours a happy holiday season I will be in India from 8 December to 2 January so if I don’t pop in for a while it’s not because I’ve forgotten about you.

  57. O.M.G. I can’t believe this! What is up with surprise pregnancies/surprise fourth children, universe?!
Well, at least we can commiserate with each other, huh? And you’re only two weeks ahead of me! I always like to have a pregnant buddy out there somewhere, and no one I know IRL is even thinking of a baby right now, so the bloggy world was my only hope. Yay!
Just repeat after me: it’s gonna be fine. it’s gonna be fine. it’s gonna be fine. That’s what I keep telling myself, too!

  58. Jessica Hamilton says:

Congratulations crazy lady!!!! Lol j/k. I wish I could have more. I just love kids but I can’t make the decision to have another one. It isn’t logical for me. I couldn’t afford it. I often wish it would happen unexpectedly so I wouldn’t get fingers pointed at me. I’m jealous! Lol

  59. Very cool, I know it will be a challenge but everything is really. What fun!

  60. OMGosh!!!! Congrats to you.
Honestly I am speechless LOL I was poking around your facebook page and wondered why you would be thinking about names and then saw the title of the blog post. OOOOOOooooo maybe this is your girl. (Yes I know you want happy & healthy but it would be nice)
    Woohoo

  61. Holy cow and congrats!!!!! You are my hero even more than ever! I also caught an update on your Facebook page thinking about names and I was a little stumped. I hope you are feeling well.

  62. popped on here to catch up on your blog, and BAM- baby! congratulations Katy!

    best,
    lila

    • Thank you, Lila. I promise that there will be no more after this, so if you check back again, there should be no new baby news (I hope).

  63. WOW. Oh my word. I would be beside myself. My darling Davey is 4 months old and I am terrified that I’m going to get pregnant again soon…my other 2 are just-turned-4 and almost-turning-2. My life feels crazy but not nearly as crazy as yours – what a great attitude you have! Thanks for the reminder that our sweethearts are all blessings from God in His perfect timing! :) Oh, and congratulations! :)

  64. I can’t remember if I said congrats yet on baby 4. So exciting! And you can definitely be inducted as an honorary triplet mama. Although I think triplets would be easier!

  65. Oh my gosh!!! Totally missed this!!! Congratulations!! So exciting. I want 4 kids too. Kenny thinks I am crazy with all of Carsyn’s needs. I told him it would be good for Carsyn because he would have to learn to be a little more independent.

  66. Wow! a bit slow of the Mark here, but that’s so fantastic, so delighted for you and so happy for you too!

What superb news! Way to go Katy!
